What's With the Wheelchair?

This is actually a picture of me in my old wheelchair, Lincoln, named after Lincoln Rhyme from my favorite JefferyDeaver series. My current chair is named Cale, named after Dark Angel's Logan Cale, and has been causing confusion for a lot of people. They want to ask me “what's with the wheelchair?”, but the fear of offending or upsetting me keeps them from doing so. The question just kind of floats around unasked. This page is devoted to answering the unasked question.

Right now I'm in and out of my chair. I can walk short distances, so I don't use it at home and walk as much as I can, but my legs are still unpredictably unstable, so I use Cale whenever I'm out of the house.
I am currently being treated for chronic Lyme disease, and the results are unpredictable, so being out of the chair isn't an option at the moment.
Another reason I have the chair is freedom. I like to go to the store with my family or hang out at the mall with my friends, but before the chair I was practically house-bound. I couldn't walk very well or for very long, so I just stayed home all the time. Now I'm free to go almost anywhere again with the people I love.

I'm not bitter about my wheelchair, I see Cale as a wonderful blessing and am very thankful for him.
